Sudden Visual Loss Due to Subtotal Retinal Detachment Successfully Managed with Emergency Vitrectomy
Case Report
Sudden loss of vision is an ophthalmic emergency that requires immediate evaluation and treatment. Retinal detachment, if not managed promptly, can lead to permanent vision loss. This case report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention in achieving excellent visual outcomes.
Discussion
A 52-year-old male presented with a sudden onset of visual loss in the right eye. On initial examination, the visual acuity was limited to finger counting at a distance of one metre. Detailed fundus examination revealed a subtotal retinal detachment involving a large portion of the retina, explaining the sudden and significant reduction in vision.
Considering the severity of the condition, the patient underwent emergency pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil injection on the same day. Prompt surgical management helped stabilise the retina and prevent further progression of the detachment.
Postoperatively, the patient showed remarkable visual improvement. Within one week of surgery, visual acuity improved significantly to 6/9. The retina was well attached, and the patient reported substantial functional vision recovery.
This case emphasises that early detection and immediate surgical intervention in retinal detachment can result in excellent anatomical and visual outcomes. Emergency vitrectomy plays a crucial role in preserving vision, especially in cases of sudden visual loss due to extensive retinal detachment.
